Onboarding Survey Instruments#

Structure#

POPROX sends weekly surveys to users. When users first enroll, they are sent two on-boarding surveys about how they read and think about news. Once these survey are completed, users begin receiving surveys about their POPROX experience.

Note that it is a required for the POPROX platform IRB that no free text input is allowed. All questions are choices from a fixed set of options.

Instrument O1: News Motivation#

First prompt: Please indicate how much you agree with each statement about your motivation to read the news.

Questions:

  • I like reading new articles that show how different kinds of people look at or are impacted by things.

  • I like reading news articles that show how different kinds of people look at or are impacted by things.

  • I like reading news articles that help me keep up with topics that are of special concern to me.

  • I like reading news articles that are practically useful in my life.

  • I like reading news articles that give me things to bring up in conversations or share with others.

  • I like reading news articles that have something that surprises me.

Second prompt: Please indicate how much you agree with each statement about your trust in the news from the Associated Press (AP).

Questions:

  • The media pay the necessary attention to important topics.

  • The media provide all of the important information regarding current topics.

  • Media reports recount the facts truthfully.

  • Journalists’ conclusions are the result of thoughtful reflection.

Question scale:

  • -2: Strongly disagree

  • -1: Somewhat disagree

  • 0: Neither agree nor disagree

  • 1: Somewhat agree

  • 2: Strongly agree

  • 99: No response

Instrument O2: News Consumption#

First prompt: Please indicate how much you agree with each statement on your news consumption.

Compared to my peers I consume a lot of news.

Question scale:

  • -2: Strongly disagree

  • -1: Somewhat disagree

  • 0: Neither agree nor disagree

  • 1: Somewhat agree

  • 2: Strongly agree

How much time do you spend in a week consuming (reading, watching, listening to) news?

Second prompt: The following questions ask about how often in a typical month you consume news on different kinds of news media.

  • How often do you watch local TV news broadcasts?

  • How often do you watch national TV news (e.g., ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC)?

  • How often do you read news articles on digital news websites or from news platforms (e.g., Google news, Reddit)?

  • How often do you read news articles on social media sites such as Facebook, X, or Reddit?

  • How often do you listen to the news on the radio or news podcasts?

Response scale:

  • Never

  • 1-2 time / month
